The land occupied by the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Sainte-Anne since the beginning of the 20th century will become a new neighbourhood in the borough of Lachine.

In deciding to divest itself of the management of its Motherhouse, the Congregation wanted its transformation to respect the historical, architectural and vegetal heritage of the site and to be in keeping with the social traditions of the religious community, which helped to build Lachine.

The grounds

The Motherhouse is located on more than 63,600 square metres of land in the heart of the borough of Lachine, at the corner of Provost and Esther-Blondin. The land is known for its promontory site and the presence of a century-old orchard, caves, statues and monuments as well as a cemetery. It comprises several buildings, including the main residence of the Congregation and the chaplain’s house.

The reconversion project

A master plan was developed in consultation with a number of partners, including: Bâtir son quartier, Habitations La Traversée, Aedifica and GRAME, the borough of Lachine as well as the Congregation of the Sisters of Sainte-Anne, which wants to be involved at every stage. This master plan aims to present a structuring project for the reconversion of a heritage site of great historical value in respect of social tradition and based on a sustainable development approach.

The project under study provides for the construction and development of approximately 450 housing units, including 150 for the sisters (in a new residence) and 240 for seniors over 75 years of age or with a loss of autonomy. The current main residence would be extended with a new wing. There are also plans to keep the Maison du Chapelain (the chaplin’s house), convert the Chapelle (the chapel) into a multi-functional room, expand parking along rue Esther-Blondin, create office space and add a public park.

Next steps

The implementation of the project requires modifications to the Master Plan and the Borough’s zoning bylaw. The project was the subject of two presentations to the joint committee of Ville de Montréal and one presentation to the CCU, the borough of Lachine’s urban planning advisory committee. In 2018, the Office de consultation publique de Montréal (OCPM) held a consultation.
